How to Get Started with ApnCloud Cloud VPS Hosting
Welcome to ApnCloud Cloud VPS Hosting. A Cloud VPS gives you dedicated virtual server resources and full administrative access, allowing you to install and configure the operating system, applications, websites, databases, control panels, and other software according to your requirements.
ApnCloud Cloud VPS Hosting is an unmanaged service. This means you are responsible for managing the operating system, installed software, server security, backups, applications, and server configuration.
Follow the steps below to get started with your Cloud VPS.
1. Check Your VPS Activation Details
After your Cloud VPS order has been activated, check your registered email address and ApnCloud Client Area for your server information.
Depending on your VPS configuration, the information may include:
- Server IP address
- Root or administrator username
- Initial password
- Operating system
- VPS hostname
- Network information
- Other service details
Keep all server credentials secure and never share your root password publicly.
2. Log In to the ApnCloud Client Area
Sign in to your ApnCloud Client Area and open your active Cloud VPS Hosting service.
From the service page, you may be able to view information and available VPS management options.
The available controls may depend on your VPS configuration and platform.
3. Connect to Your VPS
For a Linux VPS, you can normally connect to the server using SSH.
You will need:
- VPS IP address
- SSH username
- Password or SSH key
- SSH port
For most Linux installations, the administrative username is typically root, unless your operating system or configuration uses a different account.
Windows-based servers, when offered, may use a different remote access method.
4. Change Your Initial Password
After accessing your VPS for the first time, change any temporary or initial administrative password if applicable.
Use a strong and unique password containing a combination of:
- Uppercase letters
- Lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Special characters
Never reuse the same administrative password across multiple servers.
5. Update Your Operating System
Keeping your operating system updated is an important part of VPS management.
After your first login, review and install appropriate security and system updates for your selected Linux distribution or operating system.
Only install updates and packages that are compatible with your server environment.
6. Configure Server Security
Because Cloud VPS Hosting provides administrative access, you are responsible for securing your server.
Important security tasks may include:
- Using strong passwords
- Configuring a firewall
- Keeping the operating system updated
- Securing SSH access
- Removing unnecessary services
- Monitoring login activity
- Keeping applications updated
- Limiting unnecessary open ports
Server security should be reviewed regularly.
7. Install the Software You Need
With root access, you can install compatible software according to your requirements.
Examples may include:
- Web servers
- Database servers
- PHP
- Hosting control panels
- Development environments
- Website applications
- Monitoring software
Before installing software, check its system requirements and licensing terms.
8. Configure Your Domain and DNS
If you want to host a website on your VPS, point your domain to the appropriate VPS IP address.
You may need to create or update DNS records such as:
- A Record
- AAAA Record, if applicable
- MX Record
- CNAME Record
- Other service-specific records
DNS changes may take some time to propagate.
9. Configure Your Applications
After the required software is installed, configure your applications according to your needs.
For example, a website server may require configuration of:
- Web server
- PHP
- Database
- Domain
- SSL certificate
- Firewall rules
- Application files
The exact configuration depends on the software you choose to use.
10. Set Up Your Own Backups
Regular backups are extremely important when operating a VPS.
Unless a separate backup service is included or purchased, you should maintain your own backups of important data.
Consider backing up:
- Website files
- Databases
- Application data
- Configuration files
- Important user data
Whenever possible, store important backups outside the VPS itself.
11. Monitor Your VPS Resources
Regularly monitor your server's:
- CPU usage
- RAM usage
- Disk usage
- Network usage
- Running services
- System logs
If your applications require more resources than your current VPS plan provides, you may need to upgrade your service.
